A full moon happens when the Earth sits directly between the sun and the moon, and the sun’s illumination reflects off the surface of the moon, revealing to us its fullest appearance.
As you know everything is energy, and the energy during a full moon is powerful. While the moon is full, we can practice different rituals to make the most out of this potent energy, that only occurs 12 times per year.
I’m sharing with you 10 rituals that you can do during every full moon to make the most out of its energy.
Since full moons are the best time to let go and release what no longer serves you. Several things I’ll share with you on this list revolve around the theme of relinquishing and letting go.
Full Moon Rituals
1. Cleanse Your Space
If you’re the type to clean infrequently, at least clean during the full moon. You release old energy that may be creating blockages within you or your environment and full moons fully support you in doing so. Clear any clutter, get rid of old things. It doesn’t have to be a deep cleaning like you’d do during the Spring Equinox. But at least throw out old food in the fridge, clean your bathroom, vacuum, and sweep and mop your floors. In doing this, you’re getting rid of stagnant energy and making room to welcome in lighter and fresher energy.
2. Forgiveness Ritual
Forgive those who’ve hurt you. Staying on brand with the theme of letting go, the Full Moon is a good time to practice forgiveness and release any feelings of resentment that you’ve been harboring. To do this, write the names of the people who’ve hurt you. Write out how they hurt you and get very detailed. Afterwards burn the paper under the light of the full moon. Then imagine them in your mind and send them love. Thank them for the lessons that they taught you and welcome feelings of neutrality towards them.
I’ll be honest, there are people who show up on my list every single month because healing is a process. Forgiving someone takes a lot of inner work because you have to realize your role in the situation that caused you pain. Maybe you lived your life as a people pleaser with no boundaries and created the opportunity for them to walk all over you by not standing up for yourself or by not walking away after they lied to you for the 4th time. So as you forgive them, don’t forget to forgive yourself as well.
3. Moon Water
Creating moon water is simple! All you have to do is place a glass of water, a bottle of water, or a 5 gallon water jug under the moonlight overnight. Get up early the next morning and bring it inside, and drink a glass of your newly charged water. It lasts for a couple of weeks, but to carry you through the month, using two 5 gallon jugs may be better, depending on how much water you drink and what you use it for.
I’ve tested the difference between drinking water not charged under the moon and drinking moonlight water. In my opinion, there is definitely a difference in taste. I feel super charged, in a great way when I drink moon water. It’s hard to describe the feeling, so I suggest you try it for yourself.
You can use moon water for more than just drinking. Use it to mop your floors, cleanse your crystals, or as an offering on your altar.
4. Cleansing Bath
Cleansing baths are very healing. Again, during full moons we are supported in release and letting go. Fill your tub with mostly hot water so it’s nice and steamy.Add himalayan salt, epsom salt, or dead sea salt. Then add essential oils such as (sage, rosemary, and sweet orange). You want to add essential oils that remove negativity while calling in protection.
Set the mood and light black and white candles, incense, and palo santo. During the baths, speak your intentions with clarity and confidence. For example, if you are releasing something, you can say “all negativity is cleansed from my physical and subtle body. When I step out of this bath, any stagnant energy is left behind and washed down the drain. I am cleansed and purified and encompassed in love and positivity.”
5. Charge & Activate Crystals
If you work with crystals, please take advantage of charging and activating them during the full moon. Again, the energy is so powerful and crystals are energy too. If you wear a lot of crystal jewelry, recharge them under the moonlight to clear all of the energy that they’ve absorbed, so that they can continue to have the intended effect that you set for them. You don’t have to leave them outside all night, or even put them outside at all. You can set them near a window in your home that receives direct moonlight, and leave them there overnight. If you do put them outside, you can just leave them there for a few hours.
As far as activating them goes, this is where you set your intention on how you want the crystal to support you or work with you. So say you’re working with labradorite, which is an excellent crystal for the new moon, you’d set your intention to increase your intuition and to help you bring things that are hidden to light. You can learn more about activating your crystals in the video below.
6. Crystal Grid Manifesting
While new moons are typically for manifesting, you can also manifest during a full moon by creating a crystal grid. Create a crystal grid on the night of the full moon and leave it by your window overnight. Be sure to set your intention for how you want your crystals to support you. Once you’ve experienced the desired effect, work on creating a new grid for the next full moon.
7. Meditation
Since the moon is connected to our subconscious mind, meditating during a full moon helps us get in touch with our intuition. Meditation gives you insights and clarity about things in your life that you’ve been unclear about. The moon brings hidden things to the surface.
Meditation helps to clear our minds through centering ourselves and getting in touch with the essence of our being. When you meditate, you can receive downloads from the Universe in the form of pictures, song lyrics, or just by having an aha moment. If you don’t meditate regularly, try meditating at least during full moons.
8. Moon Bathe
This is one of my favorites. Sit under the light of the full moon and expose as much as your skin as possible to the moonlight. Remember, the moonlight is reflected sunlight, and the sun is very healing. Some benefits of sunlight include increased mood through elevated serotonin production, increased energy, and an improved immune system through the production of vitamin D. If you are sensitive to sunlight and burn easily in the sun, you can still take advantage of the healing benefits sunlight has to offer through moon bathing instead.
9. Moon Gaze
While you’re moon bathing, you can also moon gaze. Similar sun gazing, this practice is called trataka, in Sanskrit. Trataka means fixing your gaze on a central point. Some people stare at a candle flame, a black dot, or any small object. Moon gazing promotes relaxation through the release of melatonin, which is a by-product of serotonin. It also increases intuition, cleanses and detoxifies pineal gland, and helps you to feel more connected with the Universe. Some also say that psychic abilities are increased through trataka in general, not just through moon gazing.
10. Shadow Work
We all know how important shadow work is. While doing shadow work consistently is an awesome way to progress and evolve on your spiritual journey, I especially enjoy doing it during a full moon. The moon light illuminates what’s hidden, and our shadow likes to hide. Doing shadow work during the full moon is a deeply spiritual process. Things in the subconscious come to the surface, and you can spend the time examining these parts of yourself. Then, you can begin working to integrate them into your whole being in a healthy way.

Shadow Work Prompts:
Take time during the full moon to ask yourself those hard questions. Here are a few prompts to consider:
– What parts of myself am I afraid of showing to others?
– What self-limiting thoughts do I believe about myself and what are thoughts that I can challenge them with?
– When was the first time I felt unaccepted, or like I couldn’t be my true self and how does that impact me today?
– What behaviors trigger me in other people and what does that tell me about myself?
